Cynus Instruments Ltd, founded in 1983, were pioneers in the development of the ultrasonic multiple echo technique used for material thickness measurement through coatings. This has long been the standard required to ensure that accurate measurements are taken without the need to first zero the gauge or remove coatings. Our philosophy is to work closely with each of our customers to provde a range of products specifically for each application. Cyugnus gauges are designed to be simple to use and to withstand the harsh environmnets that they are intended for. We have built up an enviable reputation with our customers all over the world.
All utltrasonic thickness gauges must be calibrated to the velocity of sound of the material that they are measuring. Coatings such as paint, epoxy and bitument have a velocity of sound which is around 1/3 of that of steel. Tradiitional single echo technology measures the time taken for a single backwall echo to pass through the material under test as well as the surface coating, giving an apparanet material thickness measurement.
With muliple echo, readings are taken by measuring the time delay between any three consecutive backwall echo's which means that the coating thickness, up to 6mm, is completley ignored. the gauges do not need to be zeroed and no recalibration is needed at switch on.
