There are now 1 metre wide rolls in 5m, 10m and 25m lengths and there is also a 2 metre wide roll in a 25m length. All these new sizes make it more convenient for contractors by catering for the most popular applications.
Whilst the protection of trees is vital to our environment, their roots in an urban setting can cause devastating damage to nearby buildings, paths and underground drains and pipes.
Terram’s Root-Guard Plus is designed for where there is no need for a permeable barrier and it uses a Terram non-woven geotextile and HDPE as the strongest protection against root penetration and puncturing.
Terram’s other product Root-Guard has been developed for situations where it is necessary to have a water permeable barrier, for instance surrounding land drains. This uses bonded polypropylene and polyethelyne to provide excellent resistance to tree roots yet is fully permeable to water.
Installation of Terram root protection products is relatively straight forward and Terram provides guidance on this in its Root-Guard brochure.
It’s a popular misconception that tree roots grow downwards whereas in reality they spread horizontally in all directions for a distance up to the equivalent of a tree’s height. Paved or tarmac surfaces usually only require protection by relatively shallow barriers of about 1 metre deep as most tree roots are above this level. When protecting walls, a barrier is usually installed immediately adjacent to the wall, and inserting a layer of compressible material between the barrier and the foundation to prevent excessive tree root pressure. The brochure refers to BS 5837 ‘Trees in relation to Construction’ and the need to refer to a council where trees lie in a conservation area or are covered by a tree preservation order (TPO). |
