To achieve this, more bespoke supplementary lighting was called for and at the same time, highways authorities now need to consider the look of such projects in the ‘daytime street scene’.
Mouchel Parkman, the consultants to Hertfordshire Highways, looked at several luminaire options and found them to be either too big, of poor performance or visually obtrusive in the street scene. They then came across Sill’s 454 Cityliter which proved to be ideal for the job, as Allan Howard technical manager in the lighting department of Mouchel Parkman explains, “ Sill’s 454 luminaire is a third of the size of normal fittings, and has very good optics producing excellent night time performance with its asymmetric beam. Used at the top of 5 or 6 metre columns, the silver grey fittings effectively fade into the background during the daytime.” He continues, “Apart from the product specification, we have always been impressed with the excellent back-up service from Sill Lighting.”
Sill’s 454 luminaires, being flat glass fittings, produce no upward glare or lightspill and hence are not offensive to nearby residents. These IP67 projectors have diecast aluminium bodies and are available with a choice of high quality optics for compact fluorescent or metal halide lamps up to 150W.
The same matching fittings have also been supplied to other applications in the community for bus stations, paths and pavements.
