Professor Mahesh Sharma will host the course for teachers and children, at Appleford School, during the last week in August. The course will comprise of theory and teaching practice involving dyslexic children.
Entitled "Numeracy for All", the course will include the latest thinking from Professor Sharma on teaching maths. In particular the course will focus on three major questions:
1. How do children learn mathematics?
2. Why do mathematics learning problems occur?
3. What can we do to help students with learning problems in mathematics?
The main course objectives are to enable teachers to help children:
* Change their attitudes about mathematics;
* Help them acquire basic arithmetic concepts, and;
* Ascertain the reason for the child's difficulty with mathematics.
Appleford School is a co-educational day and boarding school for Dyslexic children aged 7-13. Appleford School's co-founder, educational psychologist Dr Peter Gardner, said:

The course will start at 09.30 am on Tuesday 26th August and end on Friday 29th August 2008. The fee for the four-day-long course is £575, which includes buffet lunches, tea and coffee. Accomodation can be arranged locally through the school.
Professor Mahesh Sharma is Professor of Education and the past President of Cambridge College, Massachusetts, USA. He is Director of the Center for Teaching/Learning of Mathematics, Framingham and Wellesley; Chief Editor of the international interdisciplinary journal 'Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics' and of the 'Math Notebook', a publication for teachers and parents.
He is also a Consultant to numerous school systems in the US, Europe and Asia and co-host to the Learning Center, a television programme devoted to improving learning for all. He has worked in the field of diagnosis and remediation of learning problems in maths for over twenty five years. He teaches students across a whole age-range, runs maths workshops and lectures extensively in the USA and the UK.
