Alton Towers aims to provide comprehensive disabled access at its resort, and Evac+Chairs have been installed on the rides Spinball Whizzer, Oblivion, Corkscrew and Air in order to safely evacuate mobility-impaired visitors in the event of an emergency.
Linda Hoskins, health and safety coach at Alton Towers commented, “Alton Towers makes every effort to ensure that the resort, and where possible the rides, are accessible to all our visitors. We looked towards Evac+Chair as part of the solution to this. We have installed Evac+Chairs on four popular rides, which will enable us to evacuate disabled guests off the rides should the need arise.”
The Evac+Chair enables a single user to evacuate a person of up to 150kg quickly and easily down a flight of stairs. This is achieved by intelligent design using continuous belts to provide controlled descent over stair nosings in proportion to passenger weight. The chairs can be used on even steep stairways, with an angle of descent of up to 40°. A slimline Evac+Chair model is also available for use on narrow stairs.
The theme park’s organisers are very pleased with the chairs, with Linda Hoskins adding, “We have been very happy with the service provided by Evac+Chair. We can now rest assured that all our guests, both disabled and able-bodied, can be evacuated safely from the rides.”
